Louisville freshman swingman Mike James will miss the entire season after tearing his left Achilles tendon in practice on Wednesday.
The university said an MRI exam conducted Thursday confirmed the injury. James will undergo surgery on Friday.
“First and foremost, I feel for Mike,” Cardinals coach Chris Mack said. “He’s a phenomenal young man and was poised to have a stellar freshman season. Secondly, I feel for his teammates, coaches, family and friends that have supported him daily. Lastly, I feel for Louisville fans, who will miss seeing a terrific addition to our program.
“I have no doubt, however, that Mike will be back better than ever next season.”
The 6-foot-6 James was a consensus top 100 recruit in the 2021 class. He averaged 19.4 points and 10.8 rebounds as a senior at Oak Ridge High in Orlando, Fla.
Louisville opens the regular season on Nov. 9 at home against Southern.
