Clemson’s Lawrence falls short of ACC interception record

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw an interception in the first quarter of Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech, breaking a string of 366 pass attempts without being picked off.

On a third-and-6 play with about two minutes left in the quarter, Georgia Tech’s Zamari Walton intercepted the pass — the first interception thrown by Lawrence since Oct. 19, 2019, against Louisville.

Russell Wilson holds the Atlantic Coast Conference record for the most consecutive pass attempts without an interception — 379 — set when he played for North Carolina State in 2008-09.

The interception didn’t seem to faze Lawrence. The No. 1-ranked Tigers took a 52-7 lead at halftime, and Lawrence completed 22 of 27 attempts for 391 yards and five touchdowns. The junior is a Heisman Trophy favorite and is widely predicted as the No. 1 selection of the 2021 NFL Draft.
